BLUE SKIES COMING OUR WAY…

WE’RE FEELING OPTIMISTIC FOR 2022. There’s no question that the last two years have been tough: pandemic, lockdown, world affairs have all conspired to make life feel less secure than it did. One of the learnings of lockdown though is that we have to take control of the elements of our lives that are within our control and make the best of what we can.

What does this have to do with interiors? Well, a side effect of these difficult times has been that we are all spending more time in our homes, reassessing how we use the space we have and how we spend our time there.

This is where colour comes in. If you follow Instagram, read magazines or newspapers or watch home programmes on the TV you will have noticed that colour is coming back into our lives. The neutrals and greys that have been popular for so long, and that are easy to live with, are being accentuated or even replaced by colours with a more optimistic feel to them.

Each year, for the past nineteen, Dulux, the paint company that began life in the UK in 1919, gathers together trend experts to discuss, well, trends and how these affect colour. This year the result is Bright Skies a light blue that the company describes as capturing “this hopeful mood of the moment” and “a breathe of fresh air”.

Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director of Dulux, says: “It is widely known that nature makes us feel better and taking steps to bring the outside in enhances our sense of wellbeing. So whether we are working or relaxing, creating or exercising, it is essential to have a space that reflects the optimism and desire for a fresh, new start that is top of the agenda for the year ahead.”

We think they’ve got it right. Bright Skies is surprisingly versatile, co-ordinating with other greens and blues, soft neutrals and not so soft neutrals such as khaki and greys.

To spread the word and make co-ordination practical other manufacturers have picked up the baton and are using this colour for sofas, kitchen appliances and tiles and that’s just for starters.

Hopefully 2022 will introduce a brighter, lighter era and perhaps a splash of colour will help.
