5 THINGS I’VE LEARNT ABOUT PLANNING LIGHTING FOR A SITTING ROOM

Marion Falchi, our senior designer, shares five things to consider if you’re just beginning to think about the lighting for your sitting room.

TIP 1: PLAN, PLAN, PLAN

Lighting fittings are so exciting and it is tempting to rush off and make purchases however, before you begin to choose light fittings, make a lighting plan so that you know where you want your lighting to be. There are no hard and fast rules about lighting but if you are a bit confused about where to start as a general guideline there are three types of lighting needed in most rooms and achieving a good balance between these is the secret to creating the mood you are trying to achieve.

Ambient lighting: this is your main source of lighting in the chosen space.

Task lighting: this provides the light for specific purposes such as reading or entertaining and sets the scene

Accent lighting: use this to highlight room features and objects

If you’re not confident enough to establish a balance between these three sources, consult an interior designer or lighting specialist.

TIP 2: In the spotlight

And while you’re planning, overhead lighting can be harsh. Don’t position overhead lighting directly over or just in front or behind a sofa or chair. This is one spotlight no-one wants to be in!

TIP 3: Create atmosphere

I love low ambient lighting. For instance, have your electrician set five table lamps fitted on to a five-amp socket that will all go on simultaneously with one switch.

TIP 4: Create zones

If your room is open plan, use dimmers to create zones.

TIP 5: Avoid unattractive shadows

If you have a dining table in your sitting room and want a ceiling light overhead, use small pin lighting fitted into the ceiling to avoid unattractive shadows.
