LAGOM: WHEN LESS IS DEFINITELY MORE…

Have you heard about Lagom? If you’re a trend watcher you may well have picked up on this lifestyle concept from Sweden that’s following hot on the footsteps of Hygge. However unlike Hygge this is more than an interiors trend, rather a holistic way of living based on “just the right amount”, and it seems perfect for our current times.

The principles of Lagom are about balance, quality, timelessness, moderation and curation. In our current environment where sustainability, environmental awareness and a sense of value are to the fore in everything we do, it seems the time is right for such a concept. Indeed, local business directory, Yelp, identified it as one of the main interior trends for 2022.

Taken into a home it can be applied to almost any style of interior.

Think tones and textures rather than colours and preferably neutrals. Use natural timbers, leathers, textural weaves if you want to warm things up. Furniture, much-loved, a produce of heritage or consciously purchased rather than bought on an impulse, should have a functional purpose. We’re talking quality over quantity here and, when relevant, bespoke or artisan pieces.

When it comes to dressing your home, less clutter is the way, accessories remain at a minimum. The idea is that you allow your favourite items to speak for themselves, displayed for all to see rather than compiled in groupings.

While Hygge was about a warm cuddle, a cosy cup of coffee and comfort this concept goes a bit further. If you’re already into editing down, upcycling and craftsmanship you’re on the journey.

Oh, and how’s it pronounced? Lah-gum.
