Falchi Interior’s senior interior designer suggest 5 key purchases
This week Marion Falchi shares her thoughts on what it’s really worth spending on when setting up your home.
BESPOKE CABINETRY
The beauty of bespoke cabinetry is that you can tailor it to where you need it and how you want to live in your house. It works as a storage solution, a display cabinet and has a decorative function too. In a private house in London, a difficult curved wall in an overly large room created the atmosphere of a waiting room. We decided to remove the coving and skirting and build a bespoke cabinet on the curve, trimmed with panelling and hung with artwork so that it looked like a wall.
A GOOD BED
After all we spend a third of our life in bed. Don’t rush into this purchase. Think carefully about what it is you like. For instance, as a result of my time living in America, I like a high bed – something to “climb into”. We have on occasion made beds especially for our clients. One in particular wanted a large emperor bed – not easy to find in this country. We had it made and had the divan upholstered to match the headboard.
A WELL BUILT SOFA
In theory, a sofa could last forever if it has been well-built. Try out your sofa before purchasing, your knees should come up against the cushion if you like to sit and relax. If you like to curl up on your sofa, choose one with extra depth. A sofa should be the centrepiece of your sitting room. If you can have it upholstered in a fabric of your choice: it will look amazing when you first take delivery and if it has been well made in the first instance you can have it recovered time and again.
ARTWORK
The most important thing about choosing artwork is that you like it. Sounds obvious, eh? But so often I come across clients who have inherited a piece or bought something because they thought they ought to. Ask yourself do you like the image, the colours or does it have a memory attached. These are all good reasons to invest.
A RUG OR RUGS
A rug pulls everything together. The right times to choose a rug are either as a starting point or a co-ordinating piece. Consider texture as well as colour. Go for the largest rug possible, which should sit under all your upholstery pieces
