7 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN DECORATING A SMALL BEDROOM

GUEST BEDROOM OR CHILD’S ROOM? HOME OFFICE OR SEASONAL STORAGE?  The second smallest room in the house wears many hats and frequently serves more than one purpose. If you recognise the scenario and are in a quandry about how to decorate your small bedroom, here are some tips from the Falchi team.

How to decorate a small bedroom

1.What will the room be for?

Before beginning to think about colours and/or wallpapers, decide what the function(s) of the room is/are going to be.

2.Think multipurpose

When purchasing any furniture or fittings for a small bedroom, ask yourself whether a dual-purpose option is available.

3.Keep the floor clear

Keep furniture to a minimum. In a small bedroom the essentials are a bed, a nightstand and some form of storage. A chair or seat is always desirable, but the bed can double up. Surprisingly, if it suits your style, a focal bed such as a modern four-poster can create the illusion of space. In a guest bedroom, would a sofa-bed be a better option? And, if you’re only thinking of including a single bed, perhaps in a children’s bedroom, try pushing it up against a wall. Nightstands should be wall hung or on legs to give the illusion of space. Space-saving bespoke or built-in wardrobes can be built across one wall or framed around the edges of the bed and can incorporate a nightstand, a folding bed and integrated lighting. If there’s no room for a wardrobe, there are many types of free-standing or wall hung alternatives.

4.Use your wall space

Don’t avoid shelving or pictures to bring a personal touch into the room.

Personal items are displayed in a bespoke shelving unit which also creates desk space.

5.Layer your lighting

Functional and mood enhancing, even in a small room, you’ll want an overhead ambient light, task lighting by the bed or desk and accent lighting to accentuate any personal touches or interesting details.

6.Make use of mirrors

It cannot be understated how effective mirrors are in increasing the sense of space and light in a small space. For instance, mirrored doors on a bespoke wardrobe will serve a double purpose

Mirrored wardrobe doors, wall hung nightstands and a bookshelf, ensure this bedroom in a Knightsbridge apartment has everything needed.

7.Investigate the latest decorative tricks

Use panelling to draw the eye upwards. Colour drenching to create impact.

A bespoke wardrobe creates a "nook" for the nightstand and bed. Ambient lighting is set into the wall above the bed.

Not only is the TV set into the wardrobing but further storage is concealed behind the screen.
In a small room, make use of every nook and curve.
