IT’S BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND, is it going to be sunny as we hope or will it rain? Who knows? But sunshine will come and when it does, you want your patio or seating area to be guest-ready. If you haven’t already done so, start planning now to avoid those last minute, only-thing-left-at-the- garden-centre mistakes that let down the rest of your interior.
1. Indoors out…
Zone your space according to activity and where possible use flooring to identify the zones. Garden rugs have come a long way, most are made of sustainable materials and not expensive, plus they add a warm layer to your outside styling. Yes, style your outside space as you would your home. Think vases, trays, cushions, candles, throws, stools, lanterns, whatever works. Use accessories to give your outdoor space a warm layered look that creates a cohesive atmosphere. Whether your focal point is a dining table, coffee table, bench or chair, have some fun styling it up and swap things around when you feel inclined to refresh the mood.
2. Don’t over co-ordinate
You wouldn’t want everything “matchy-matchy” indoors, why do it outdoors? That said, most of us will buy a set of garden furniture so, throw in something quirky or antique – a table, side-table, mismatched chair or stool – and use mix and match cushions to individualise. (Use weather resistant fabrics if possible or be prepared to store things away.)
3. Don’t forget the plants
It may sound obvious but selecting a statement potted plant or plants to sit on your patio area provides a focus and links back to the garden. As well as potentially bringing in colour, they can also be used for zoning. If you’re not green fingered yourself, consult your local garden centre to come up with a focal idea for planting. There’s lots of inspiration on the internet and in magazines.
4. Give some thought to lighting and heating
Let’s face it, there’s nothing quite as pleasant as sitting out in the garden in the evening, but do your security lights really do the trick? And while a cosy blanket is stylish, a fire-pit or garden heater is much more effective.
5. It makes scents
Outdoor scents that is. Don’t rely on the garden to do all the work. Sophisticated scents like cedar or clove have a subtle ability to create atmosphere and long incense sticks are available that burn for 2-3 hours. While it might seem surprising, incense works effectively in open air spaces and helps cement the memory of a great afternoon or evening.
